Ryobi’s 40V cultivator is a great example of how far battery tech has come. For years, "battery powered tiller" was almost a joke, but this brushless model has enough torque to actually handle real garden beds.
It’s designed as a cultivator, meaning it’s perfect for maintaining existing beds, working in compost, or prepping a area that’s already been broken. The brushless motor is efficient, and the 40V battery provides a surprising amount of runtime. It’s much easier to store and transport than a bulky gas tiller.
Things to Consider: It struggle with hard, compacted clay or breaking new sod. If you’re starting a garden from scratch in tough soil, you’ll want a gas unit or a high-amp corded model. For maintaining an active garden, though, it’s a no-hassle dream.
